Walker Ladd is an abstract expressionist painter based in Mobile, Alabama, whose work channels raw emotion through color, gesture, and controlled chaos. Originally from Los Angeles, Walker brings an unconventional background to her artistic practice: professional modern dancer, psychologist, academic, researcher, and painter. She holds a PhD in Psychology and serves as Chair of the Department of Research at Saybrook University.
Five years ago, Walker moved to Mobile, having never been to the city and knowing no one. The move—an act of uncertainty, reinvention, and intuition—mirrors much of her approach to painting: step into the unknown, pay attention to what emerges, and figure it out along the way.
Working primarily on large-scale surfaces, Walker approaches painting as a physical and immediate act. Her marks are bold, impulsive, and unapologetic — shaped by movement, emotion, and a willingness to relinquish control. She frequently incorporates cursive handwriting into her paintings, using words, fragments, repetition, and partially obscured text as both visual marks and traces of thought. At times legible and at others buried beneath layers of paint, the written word becomes another gesture—personal, immediate, and imperfect.
Her work explores the tension between analytical thought and intuitive expression, dismantling narratives and resisting the impulse to make experience orderly or easily understood. For Walker, painting offers a counterpoint to a professional life grounded in rigorous inquiry. Where research asks her to analyze, interpret, and explain, painting allows her to respond without explanation. Each work becomes an experiment in letting intuition win.
Now rooted in Mobile, Walker continues to develop a visual language that is fiercely personal, emotionally charged, and defiantly free.
